Floating Shelves in the Kitchen
There’s a certain lightness and simplicity inherent in floating shelves, which is why we love to incorporate them into our kitchen designs.
By nature, they help to open up a space visually, and when used in collaboration with other intentionally-placed elements, they can serve as focal pieces with highly-functional and space-saving uses. We are often asked if we are “known” for something within our designs and it would be a safe argument to say floating shelves are part of our signature style.
Floating shelves as a focal element
Floating shelves serve as the perfect opportunity to create visual interest within a space. Not only do they keep lines of sight open (e.g. in order to view an adjoining room or an outdoor space), but they can also add architectural contrast within a room. In fact, they are particularly striking when mixed & matched with different cabinetry because they help to provide a feeling of a curated collection rather than an all-around streamlined look. In the Midcentury Revitalization kitchen, we custom-designed a floating shelf system in brass and whitewashed oak. The impetus for the shelf came from the previous kitchen design where a full-height cabinet once sat. Wanting to continue making use of storage, while maintaining sightlines to the dining room and outdoor space, brought about the idea of an artfully designed suspended shelf.
Styling tips for floating shelves
Display only select items in a balance of function and aesthetics. Unlike cabinets with doors, where you can stash a wide variety of odds and ends, your floating shelf space should be reserved only for curated items. After all, these shelves are meant to be an ongoing display, so you’ll want to make them as visually pleasing as possible. Break away from the ordinary and display art, photos or mementos. Bring the outdoors in with potted herbs or indoor plants. Floating shelves in a kitchen are an opportunity for individual expression. Whatever your preference, just be sure to think strategically about how that shelf works with the rest of the space and proceed with decor accordingly.
Consider the function of open shelves
Floating shelves act as excellent space savers and are incredibly functional. While they should still display only visually appealing items, there’s no reason they can’t also work for your everyday needs. In a kitchen, for instance, floating shelves are the perfect option to free up countertop and cabinet space. You can stylishly display frequently used spices and cookbooks, keeping them at easy access. Or maybe your collection of dinnerware deserves a spotlight within your kitchen. Sculptural salt and pepper shakers can provide an artful accent or pop of color. Keep in mind, it is best to keep items that will see frequent use on your floating shelves to ensure you never have to worry about dust build-up.
Adding a floating shelf to a room instantly helps to promote openness and simplicity, and whether your style gravitates more towards modern or midcentury, incorporating these shelves can go a long way towards making your space feel like home. It’s truly well-designed living at its finest.
