Embarking on a Cabin Escape in Northern Minnesota
Though this time of year can give us all feelings of restlessness as we await spring, it’s also the perfect time to take advantage of the “staycation.” After all, just a few hours’ drive away, there are incredible weekend getaways just waiting for you to enjoy in our beautiful state of Minnesota. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend with a loved one or want something a bit more active for the whole family or a group of friends, there’s nothing quite like a cabin escape in northern Minnesota where you can take in the snowy winter views from a cozy perch. This week, we’re showing you our favorite Minnesota staycation finds, and have a feeling that once you get a glimpse, your next getaway will be booked in an instant.
Of course, as designers, we are always in tune with environmental psychology and the impact our interior spaces have on our well-being (even on vacation!). Each of the cabins featured below is a lesser-known find and hidden gem. The interior spaces were carefully planned to create moments of quiet solitude and connections with nature. Read on to find the perfect staycation to feed what your soul craves. Beauty and nature await.
New: Simple Scandinavian Escape
“The renovation of SweetWater cottage began with a desire to connect—to the wooded setting along Lake Superior, to the history of the area, and to foster connection among the people who would spend time there. Secluded on three acres of boreal forest near Lutsen, the property was in dire need of a refresh when Kail and Becky Katzenmeier, Kansas residents and frequent North Shore visitors, purchased it to use as a family retreat and vacation rental for their business, NorthLight Lodging. They named it SweetWater, from French explorer Samuel de Champlain who called Lake Huron La Mer Douce, the sweet sea.”
When we first came across Sweetwater Cabin, we were completely enamored with the nordic-inspired and serene kitchen design. Designed by Julie Arnold, founder of PLACE Interiors, the renovated space reflects her refined and natural design sensibilities. The pale-painted cabinetry provides a stunning contrast to the oversized wood-clad island. We love a meticulously curated space and it’s clear the Katzenmeier’s worked with great intention in selecting each item within the space to create an environment that embodies the essence of the North Shore.
New: Kodiak on Long Lake
With a slight geographic deviation eastward from Minnesota, Kodiak on Long Lake in Comstock, Wisconsin is minimalist modern bliss. This quiet sanctuary envelops guests in a monochromatic color scheme, accented with artful touches of whimsy. Constructed in 2020 by husband and wife duo, Eric and Stephanie Gutiérrez, this secluded property provides an immersive nature experience, complete with gorgeous sunsets and lake views.
Kodiak on the Lake perfectly illustrates how simplicity in design can make a statement while also cultivating a space that is naturally calming. The neutral backdrop allows the views of nature to become a design element within the space, neither taking center stage, but rather co-existing to support each other. Close your eyes and picture yourself here with a morning cup of coffee. Can you hear the birds chirping in the woods and the lake lapping at the shore? Now it’s time to take the kayak out to explore a bit more. Absolutely magical.
New: Metal Lark Tower
Next up is MetalLark Tower in Frederic, Wisconsin by Nordlys Lodging Co. The Nordlys name comes from the combination of the Nordic word “Nord”, meaning North, and “Lys” meaning Light. This cabin perfectly reflects these words. Set amongst rolling meadows, this modern cabin features wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows for the perfect birds-eye view of its surroundings, creating the feeling of an open-air cabin. You are sure to be in awe no matter the season as you take in the panoramic views.
On a winter visit, imagine the comforts of cozying up by the fireplace to watch the snow fall or enjoy a good book. In summer, guests can enjoy the private lily pad dappled lake via the provided paddleboat or their preferred non-motorized water vessel. Either way, you are sure to enjoy this marvel of a modern cabin where every detail was planned to create an experience you’re sure to remember.
Gunflint Cabin
A modern architecture dream, the Gunflint Cabin located in Grand Marais, Minnesota, is home to a chic and minimal style you’ll instantly fall in love with. Just steps from the house is an inviting deck where you can soak up the fresh air and view the lake up close, or if you prefer to stay cozy, grab a blanket and take a seat in front of the sleek fireplace – the views are simply astounding. Designed in 2010 by VJAA, this AIA Award-winning design brings the outdoors in, connecting its occupants with mother nature. A stay at the Gunflint Cabin is an assured detox from the demands of technology. With no internet, no cell reception, and no TV you’ll feel grounded and calm in no time at all.
In the summer months, a quick dip into the cool waters of this lakeshore property or a long hike with magnificent views will make you feel alive. During winter, cabin-goers can enjoy the nearby ski hills and cross-country trails, then return to take the chill off in the sauna. The ample kitchen is perfectly equipped for large meals and gatherings.
Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins
Is there anything more delightful than a lofted woodland view? For a truly unique experience, stay among the trees in this modern and sophisticated cabin in Dakota County, Minnesota, where you’ll be treated to a cozy, inviting atmosphere as you revel in the quiet of the forest. While not technically in the northern area of Minnesota, we couldn’t resist showcasing this property located just southeast of Rosemount, MN. Designed in 2015 by HGA, these multi-award-winning cabins are the most economically priced stays on our list.
The treehouse-inspired camper cabins are part of a 456-acre public park. If you’re considering a stay, be prepared for a bit more of a rustic experience, as you’ll be responsible to provide your own bedding and using the bathroom in a separate building. All worthwhile to enjoy the modern architecture and utilitarian designed space while immersing you in the outdoors. The Whitetail Cabins are modern-day glamping at its finest. Whether you are looking for a solo writing retreat, a quiet escape from the city, or a weekend with friends and family, this property will deliver just the experience you seek.
If these stunning cabins have you craving an escape, then a winter staycation may just be the antidote you need to survive the next few months here in Minnesota. All you have to do is take the leap.
