Minneapolis, Mn

Monochromatic was the name of the game for this downtown Minneapolis rental condo in the sky.

An added challenge to this project was working within the existing material palette as no changes could be made to the structure or finishes due to condo building guidelines. The client loves all things neutral and the assignment was clear: no pops of color in materials or finishes, shades of muted tones only to create a calm and restorative space.

By removing color from the equation, the design team was able focus on a soothing palette, rich with texture. The challenge was to elevate this simple palette, removing any chance it could appear flat and lifeless. The upholstery and rug grays are related, but differentiated by depth and tonality. Layer upon layer in muted gray tones play nicely off of the existing wall color and flooring material. The result created visual interest, enhanced by incorporating multiple tactile and visual textures.

The client requested a reworked furniture layout, desiring a sectional, but unable to see how it could work within the limited living room footprint. A semi-custom solution allowed for maximum seating while honoring existing traffic paths. An armless section uses every available inch while not impeding balcony access. A plush swivel chair rounds out the seating options, with an ottoman comfortable enough to function as an additional seat when needed for guests. The swivel function is the perfect solution for either watching television solo or interacting with additional occupants of the space. The metal and marble nesting coffee tables add another flexible furniture solution.

An original oil by Colleen Elizabeth was a colorful surprise pick. The design team found the piece so calming, almost mesmerizing, and put it forth as a piece powerful enough to anchor the space - the client agreed. The piece is stunning in its simplicity, commanding attention as the only infusion of color while creating a feeling of zen within the space.
